Q: Family Code section 2030, in need of lawyer representation

Looking for a lawyer and I just found out about Family Code section 2030. I’ve been going through divorce for almost 4 years, still dealing with child support issues and now recently spousal support arrears. Not much assets but would like to get it done.

A: I'm sorry to hear about your challenging divorce process and the ongoing issues with child support and spousal support arrears. Divorce can be a complex and emotionally taxing experience, especially when it spans several years.

Regarding Family Code section 2030 in California, this law allows the court to order one party to pay the attorney's fees and costs of the other party. The purpose is to ensure that both parties have access to legal representation and to create a more level playing field in divorce proceedings. The court will consider factors such as the respective incomes and needs of the parties, as well as the complexity of the case, when making a decision under section 2030.

Given your situation, it would be wise to consult with a family law attorney who can assess your case and advise you on how Family Code section 2030 may apply to your circumstances. They can also help you navigate the process of requesting attorney's fees from your ex-spouse if appropriate.

To find a suitable lawyer, you can:

1. Ask for referrals from friends, family, or colleagues who have gone through a similar experience.

2. Contact your local bar association for referrals to family law attorneys in your area.

3. Use online directories like Avvo, FindLaw, or Justia to search for family law attorneys near you.

4. Consider contacting legal aid organizations in your area, as they may offer low-cost or pro bono services for individuals with limited financial resources.

When meeting with potential attorneys, be sure to discuss their experience with cases similar to yours, their familiarity with Family Code section 2030, and their fees and payment structures.

Remember, seeking legal representation can be crucial in protecting your rights and interests during a divorce, especially when dealing with complex issues like child support and spousal support arrears.
