Q: My dad told me he put my name on his house 8 years ago at which time his wife was there see addtl below
I inquired with her because I heard she was behind on the taxes and now she is stating she knows nothing about it first I want to know what my liability is and where do I find out if my name is actually on the house.my dad has since passed and he told me she could live there til her demise or she wanted to move
A: Any lawyer can look up the deed to confirm who’s on the title. There also needs to be an estate opened, and his will needs to be reviewed. If you are on the title, then you own at least a third, and possibly half, of the house as a Tenant in Common. You can force the sale if you choose to do so. Unpaid taxes will eventually result a tax sale at auction. If that happens, you have about a year to redeem the property by paying the winning tax sale bidder all the taxes, penalties, interest and attorneys fees (interest is very high on tax sales) incurred or you lose title. You need to look into the status as soon as possible.

Deeds are a matter of public record, and any attorney should be able to pull this up in Land Records (or you could go to the Land Records office yourself to research and retrieve the deed).
There are several ways people can be "put on title," so there may or may not be an estate involved. It can get complicated if someone has lifetime rights but doesn't pay the taxes or other operational costs, so you may wish to seek legal counsel.
