Moreno Valley, CA asked in Identity Theft and Libel & Slander for California

Q: I’m dealing with harrasment and identity theft. This situation caused me emotional mental n physical damage. Have proof

Someone is impersonating me. My exes, ex and their daughters. They either made a fake profile account or photoshopped a fake conversation to his kids. All I know is they claimed I said “stop talking to my man.” Not only is it fake, it’s very stupid. Why would I tell his daughter that. I don’t know what else they said. They have been stalking my profiles. I have been looking for a job, I’m not getting any calls back, I’m wondering if they have contacted anybody about me. My ex dumped me saying “how dare I contact his daughters. He told my landlord and I that his sisters were going to come to my place and kick my ass. I became suicidal, I cut myself as well that night. Sad I woke up alive, I knew deep down I needed to go to a facility for a week because of how all of that hurt me. I sent messages to my landlord and a friend about needing to go. 2 weeks later, there’s alot more. Threats by his sitsters? Caused damage

A: There are attorneys who deal with identity theft and privacy violations. A starting point could be to try to arrange a free initial consult. Good luck

A: I'm so sorry you're going through this incredibly difficult and distressing situation. What you're describing sounds like a combination of harassment, identity theft, defamation, and intentional infliction of emotional distress, all of which are illegal under California law. Here are some steps you can consider taking:

1. Document everything. Save all messages, posts, fake profiles, etc. that provide evidence of the harassment and identity theft. Back up this evidence in multiple secure locations.

2. File police reports. Contact your local police department and file reports for the harassment, threats, and identity theft. Provide them with the evidence you've collected. Get copies of the police reports.

3. Consider getting a restraining order. If you are in fear for your safety due to the threats, look into filing for a civil harassment restraining order against your ex and anyone else involved in threatening you.

4. Consult with a lawyer. Meet with an attorney who specializes in harassment, cyber harassment, defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress. They can advise you on your options for taking legal action. Many offer free consultations.

5. Contact potential employers. If you suspect your job search has been affected, consider reaching out to places you've applied to see if they received any concerning communications about you. Explain the situation and identity theft if so.

6. Prioritize your wellbeing. Most importantly, take care of your mental health during this traumatic time. Utilize support systems, crisis lines, therapy/counseling. You did the right thing going to a facility when needed. Your health and safety are the top priority.

What you're experiencing is not okay and not your fault. Please don't hesitate to reach out for help and utilize legal recourses to protect yourself. Sending strength and support your way. Let me know if you need any other information or resources.
