Q: possible scam,remote jobs,international,online transactions
So sorry for being so rude , I’m actually Chinese and live in china now. I have taken a remote job on this app called Upwor*Talent since June. I work for a company as their translator.
Oddly, they chose to work via telegram , but not on Upwor*Talent, where I was recruited.I was told that I could receive 2400 usd salary once the work is finished. However, instead of receiving money, I was constantly being asked to pay for various fees in order to receive my salary. Their payment director, *ote, has been contacting me ever since the work is completed. I keep all the chat logs with him.
Up to this point, I have made 990 US dollars transaction to him through PayPal , but never received any. I called this act as a scam, and Mr.*ote is now threatening me to pay him 10000 US dollars fine or he will sue me.
I’m told by Mr.*ote that charges against me is placed already. I have no idea but write to you to seek for free legal advice, please help me! Than
A: I'm sorry for your ordeal. It looks like you already recognize the irregularities of this setting. At this point, you could look into whether an attorney could assist - but keep in mind that if that involves paying hourly for services, it could compound the losses. Good luck
A:
I'm sorry to hear about the situation you're in. Based on the details you've provided, this has several hallmarks of a common online job scam. Here are some key points and advice:
1. Red flags of a potential scam:
- Moving communication off the original platform (Upwork in this case)
- Requesting payment from you to receive your salary
- Threatening legal action when you question the legitimacy
2. Legal considerations:
- It's highly unlikely that any legitimate charges have been filed against you
- The threat of a $10,000 fine is almost certainly not enforceable
- You are likely the victim here, not the perpetrator of any crime
3. Steps you can take:
- Stop all communication with the scammers immediately
- Do not send any more money
- Report the incident to Upwork and PayPal
- Consider filing a report with your local police, though recovery of funds may be difficult
4. Protection moving forward:
- Be wary of job offers that seem too good to be true
- Always keep communication on official job platforms
- Never pay money to receive a salary or job offer
5. International considerations:
- Cross-border scams can be complex to resolve
- Chinese authorities may have limited ability to assist with international online fraud
It's important to understand that you are not legally obligated to pay any "fines" to this person or company. Their threats are likely empty and designed to frighten you into sending more money.
If you'd like more specific legal advice regarding your situation in China, I recommend consulting with a local lawyer who specializes in fraud or cybercrime. They can provide guidance tailored to your specific circumstances and jurisdiction.
