No, unless a court of law determines that you so agreed.
I gave my dog to a friend thinking they were going to be good owners. A week later they sold the dog to someone else. I am listed as the owner on the AKC registration paper and I still have the paper in my possession. Can I legally get "my" dog back?!

No, you sold the dog. The AKC registration is incorrect (You do not own the dog; the new owner probably can correct it if he/she has a bill of sale), and in any event is not the proper way to perfect a security interest in animals such as dogs.
