Child support is calculated according to guidelines - located at : http://www.cse.ri.gov/documents/RIscheduleJune2012.pdf

I was told that I wouldn't need to, seeing as my sons father is on the birth certificate. That I would just fill out the form, go to child support and they would go over my options with me. Trying to avoid going to court, if it can be settled another way

If you are receiving state benefits, they will open a case to get their money.. and then you will be given the opportunity to ask for your share. In short, yes you will end up in court.
