Yes. Tennessee follows the mature minor doctrine, meaning that children over the age of 14 are presumed to be capable of making decisions regarding their health. They have the right to consent or refuse medical treatment.

Q: Son admitted to principal using marijuana at school , he wasn't caught by any faculty or in possession of anything.

He is being sent to alternative school for a full calendar year. Is there anyway to get this reduced or have it removed from his record?

You should be able to challenge the school discipline. Does your son have an IEP? Other due process protections attach if he does. You should consult an education law attorney to discuss challenging the school discipline.

I agree with Mr. Wills. The determination of whether or not the police were acting within the bounds of the law is a very fact intensive one. If you feel like the child suffered an injury as a result of excessive force on the part of the police, then you should consult a civil rights attorney.

If you don't have an order from another state awarding him custody, I think you will be fine. Any services that you need to access in TN will treat you as the sole custodian. Hope that helps.

I agree with Mr. Grefseng about notice to the biological father, but would also add that TN will only allow a person to adopt in situations like this (where the mother is retaining her rights) if the person adopting is married to the mother.

No court is going to order that custody of a 17 year old girl be awarded to her 18 year old boyfriend. If her mother dies and no family takes her in, it is likely that DCS will put her in foster care until she turns 18. I am sorry that it sounds like she is going through a rough time. You... If your son has an IEP, then you need to ask for a Team Meeting to discuss options. He may qualify for home bound until he works through some of his issues.
