Parents in Georgia are not required to pay for cars, insurance or college, especially once the children are 18. If he doesn't want to contribute, he won't have to.

Q: If there has been significant lapse in time...

If there has been a significant lapse in time since non custodial father has sought to have contact with the child, can abandonment still be considered if the father has been paying child support through the government during this time?

Abandonment charges are sought when a parent has not financially supported their child for a period of more than 30 days. If the non-custodial parent is consistently paying child support, abandonment charges would not be appropriate.

Q: If I live in Georgia and the father lives in florida, would I be able to file for child support even though I'm married?

He states that if I do file he wouldn't pay it and says since he is in florida they will protect him if he doesn't pay his child support? That he just can't enter back into Georgia. I'm just wondering if this is true or not?

You may need to file for a child support modification. In the meantime, cut other discretionary areas of your budget like gas, cable, takeout and a phone internet plan and redirect that towards child support.
