While your family was devastated by the loss of a pet, and you probably consider your pet to be part of the family. In Ohio, a pet is merely personal property and there is no emotional or other non-economical damages that can be recovered, absent circumstances that your post does not mention.
My father had dementia and was allowed to leave the facility in the middle of the night in the dead of winter. He ultimately froze to death and was found the next morning because he forgot how to get back or where he was going. He walked passed security and night staff, right out the front door.

Probably not. You would need to prove the veterinarian recklessly treated your kitten, and even so, your recovery would be limited to the "value" of the kitten. Without knowing more, it is difficult to assess.
