Q: As a student on F1 visa, can we volunteer to help w/ COVID, such as emails?

For example, writing emails asking for mask donations on behalf of student-organizations. The student-organization is non-profit, there's no money.

I want to make sure this is okay as volunteering, as I am an F1 as a medical student.

It sounds fine from what you wrote. The DOL looks to the following to determine whether you're actually volunteering.

Is the entity that will benefit/receive services from the volunteer a nonprofit organization?

Is the activity less than a full-time occupation?

Are the...

It depends on time left and jurisdiction. In the federal courts there is the first step and compassionate Release. In the state if it’s a misdemeanor many DA’s are not opposing release resentence motions. I think if an inmate has diabetes heart problems or asthma or other respiratory issues... View More

If your unemployment is related to COVID-19 you should eventually receive benefits from the day you lost your job. The new unemployment laws are being amended almost daily. Almost everyone now qualifies for some type of unemployment unless they receive paid leave or can work from home and get paid.... View More

If you had not applied for asylum and you had possession of a valid F-1 visa then you could possibly travel to Mexico and return to the U.S.

However, your application for asylum has placed you in a predicament and you should not be traveling abroad unless you have no intention of returning...

Unfortunately no one will be able to answer your question at the present time. It's much more complicated given the facts you state.

Apply for unemployment benefits immediately. You should recover them. If you don't that would not be good because it's so easy to recover them...

You should read the contract. If it was well written there would be a force de majure clause. The clause let's parties out of the contract for events beyond their control.

The clause may not be in there, and there maybe clauses in your favor, but without reading the contract no real...

Q: With the current National Emergency is it conceivable some residential contracts could be void in some cases?

For example, say someone signed a contract 45-60 days ago, is it conceivable at some point in the near future (quarantines, lockdowns, clusters of outbreaks) a contract could be void because of the virus? Somewhat akin to "damage" perhaps? Or circumstances out of the seller/buyers control?

It's probably unlikely that contracts would be considered void, as that would declare there is something defective in a contract, such as illegality or failure to meet requirements for formation of a valid contract.
