Then got a letter saying he’s being sued by lady he bumped....personal injury. She was cleared at the scene. Now we got a letter saying he has a court date. What should we expect. We have a lawyer coming with us.

You most likely do not have a case. The infliction of emotional distress would need to be intentional. Here it sounds like you violated a course and/or university policy and were punished for it. I hope this semester ends on a more positive note.
