You should reach out to the new collection company to understand the status of your debt and discuss your options. Since the original debt collector agreed to withdraw the judgment but then sold it, you need to clarify the situation with the current holder of the debt. Explain that the original... View More

I was in a physically abusive relationship, and during this time, he made me sign the paperwork making me liable for if his cousin skipped bail. I told him know he punch me in the face and said if I didn't do it, it'll get much worse at home. He forced me to go to his aunt's house... View More

Who made you sign the paperwork making you liable if his cousin skipped bail. Unless "he" is the bondsman, you don't have a case against the bondsman.

I don't know how a judge would rule in a civil lawsuit. I don't know if you have done anything illegal, but your post does raise some questions. I am not sure what services you promised. How does traffic become an issue in a 1,800 mile trip? How can they simply refuse service? It seems... View More

You voluntarily paid the debt on behalf of grandma. He apparently never agreed to pay you. On what legal basis do you sue him? I don't see that you have a case.

Q: I had a conference call today with the courts for a cilvil matter. The plaintiff did not show up for the call.

I am curious as to what happens now.

It depends. First, this was not a conference call. A conference call is between clients and vendors, partners, etc. This was a court hearing of some kind. It may have been a motion hearing, a status conference, a case management conference, a final hearing, etc. (details matter)

Second, you...

Q: Should I pay for a 16y old speeding ticket from another state? Pay the state or collection agency?

I recently received this speeding ticket apparently in 2004. I don't understand, why I just got it now? The address I currently live wasn't on my drivers license then. I currently live in a different state from the issued ticket. I'm confused as in what I should do.

It is unclear what state the ticket is from. You will want to contact an attorney in that state.

Your options may include refinancing, forbearance, taking out another loan to pay this back, borrowing money to pay it off, etc. You will find many resources, blog posts, AG articles, and the like... Call an attorney for help as the debt collector may very well be violating federal law. Keep a log of each time they call.

You should file a claim in Conciliation Court. Unless the debt owed is for court-ordered restitution, the fact that he is on probation won't matter.
