Q: Isn't it against the law (CA) to file a false police report?

What course of action may I take as a victim of this abuse of the law? Am I able to sue the individuals and/or can they be arrested for lying to LE and their harassment?

This is True. It is against the law to knowingly report a crime or file a false police report. Be aware that it will be your burden to provide the proof of the falsity--Law enforcement will not jump through hoops for you because they typically get many individuals claiming that a report was... Q: Husbands step mother who we haven’t spoke to in 10 years is contacting his business partner to tell lies about him.

Is there anything we can do?

She has no involvement in the business and has reached out directly to his partner to speak lies on him. They have been in business together for nearly 2 yrs now.

You could contact the mother in law and request that she stop calling your husband's business partner. If that does not work, you could hire an attorney to send a cease and desist letter. It sounds like there could be grounds for a defamation lawsuit based on slander.

Yes, anyone can sue for anything at any time.

The issue, in my opinion, is whether you can find a lawyer to accept the case on a contingency. That means the lawyer would not get paid unless the case settles/goes to trial with a verdict for you.

I think you will have a difficult time...

If it is a matter of public concern (as it seems to be) there are constitutional considerations. The statement would have to have been made with actual malice.
