Q: What is the process of getting emancipated if petitioning to the court isn’t an option?

I have been having major issues with my adoptive family for as long as I can remember and I am finally at the point where I can’t take any more. My 16th birthday is approaching soon and I have a stable job with a great income and I am trying to go about emancipation so that I can move on from the... View More

I am sorry to hear about your situation. I am also sorry to tell you that, in Ohio, there is no ability for a minor to emancipate herself.

Probably not best practice for a number of reasons, but I believe if your son is home, the probation officer can visit at any time. Remember, probation is a grace granted by the court as an alternate to jail - or in the case of juveniles, detention.

I would mention this and your concerns to...

If you are off the grid, why would you have to go to the police to ask permission to live with a family friend, or anywhere? I am assuming that you are still under 18. You can file a petition for emancipation before you are 18 that would give you the right to live away from your parents. You can... View More

A 17 year old is still a child, so yes, you can date if your parents allow it. 16 is the age of consent in North Carolina so unless you were having sex prior to being 16, he won't get into any criminal trouble or be 'thrown into jail (at least likely not for getting you pregnant) - so he...
